review 1: This book was a bit of a surprise for me. I expected it to be a lot less stressful and crazy than it was. I can't even imagine the stress this woman went through. It does make me wonder how much of it is true, and how much is artistic liberty. Then again, even if only 15% of it was true it would be horrible to live through. I started out having no sympathy for Julie, the real victim, because she didn't distance herself from Lynn (she kept going out with her, kept inviting her over etc.). Julie eventually does cut ties, it doesn't take that long really, but I personally would've made that move way sooner. I liked this book because both sides are so well written. Lynn isn't some foaming at the mouth crazy that everyone can instantly look at and say, "just ignore her/ stay aw... moreay/ she's nothing but a crazy liar". Then again, every single person in the entire community has had an issue with Lynn lying- so I was pretty surprised that they hadn't all come together to push Lynn out long ago. I think that's one thing that didn't ring 100% true- (to me) because I can't imagine an entire community being that stupid. Then again- I live in the mid-west and am slowly learning that people are WAY dumber than I could ever imagine- so maybe that part was true? I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject of bullying, or stalking, or (to use a phrase from the book) false victimization (where the bully makes out to be the victim). There's really nothing about this that I didn't like. And best of all it wasn't a story about a stupid woman that puts herself in a bad situation and then continues to do stupid things which only make it all worse (like Susan on every season of Desperate Housewives). I was extremely thankful for that.
review 2: This book made me think long and hard about what makes someone go over the edge like this, and what people on the outside do when it happens. If this happened in my neighborhood, especially if it happened to a good friend, you wouldn't be able to keep me away from a court room. I was horrified at the cowardice displayed by Julie's "friends". I was hurt by it. I hated them as much as the crazy neighbor who did this to Julie. The plot was gripping and well-told. It was easy to see how Julie and Lynn became friends, and to understand when that friendship began to deteriorate, and satisfying how diplomatically Julie dealt with it. How would she ever have seen this coming? You go through life expecting people to behave normally, and when it's so outside the bounds of reasonableness, it's impossible to understand. The writing wasn't spectacular, but it read like it was genuine (which it was). I wish a couple of things had been different: that the author hadn't switched to Lynn or Rick's perspective during the book, and that there had been some sort of note about what happened to Lynn in the end. Did she get help? Did she terrorize the next family who moved in, or another one in the neighborhood? My desire for vengance remained unquenched. This book will stay with me for a l-o-n-g time! less
