review 1: I'm a little disappointed. The first book in the Hemlock trilogy was amazing and Thornhill dropped the ball - what happened?! It's like the author lost focus. [See below for my silly conspiracy theory. ;)] I'm giving it 4 stars just because I *love* Kathleen Peacock's writing (mostly b/c of my love for the first book; have I mentioned that already??), but it's just such a strange, overly-long side story (tangent) that breeds too many characters with too little depth. Peacock can create a great multi-faceted character, it's just that there were too many and not enough time to really feel an emotional connection, good or bad. I wish there was more witty dialogue, plot twists that weren't (aren't) so predictable, and a juicier romance. Isn't the second part of the trilogy, w... morehen a love triangle is involved, supposed to focus more on the other guy?Thornhill was predictable and felt forced. It seems like a lot of authors are being pushed to publish their books on a certain timeline. Artists need time to develop and perfect their craft. With this book, as with others (Matched/Divergent series as examples), I really wonder if authors aren't given the time they need to develop and flesh out their story. Where Hemlock left off provided so much potential to a stand-out series. I have hope for the third book, and the second wasn't absolutely awful - it just didn't reach the same level of awesomeness for me. That said, I finished it in a day. It's still pretty great. :)
review 2: I liked this one more than the first. There was a lot less drama and a lot more action. Also, I think Mac really grew as a character. She seems stronger and smarter than she was in the first one. Jason seems to be evolving as a character too. I liked some of the new characters we were introduced to. I liked Eve and Dexter and I'm anxious to learn more about "Curtis" (anyone who has read this book knows who I really mean) and what happened after he left and why he did it. I can't help but wonder though, where is Ben?? And I gotta wonder what will Serena be like now...? less
