review 1: This book does not fail to widen my eyes from chapter to chapter. Literally gave me goosebumps, it is so disgusting I had shivers, and it is horrendous it made me cringe. Kathryn Bonella did a fantastic job as a journalist doing research regarding this matter and deliver it that in a way it is very commercial (easy-reading) but at the same time deep in journalism ethic. The theme itself is what attracts me to grab one of its copy from the store, and better yet it provides graphic evidence! So what we have fantasized during reading, can actually be visioned vividly because of the included photographs. She basically had a few inmates to tell their inside stories of what happened inside Kerobokan prison which is just unimaginable. What i favor most from the whole book is that... more Kathryn actually puts all her sources stories into a well-structured testimony and somehow it does not sound biased. The way she describes the settings & the surroundings makes it feel like you're reading a fictional psycho-thriller book but its more likely to be a newspaper article because of the accuracy of stories she had researched. If you are looking for a book that is highly entertaining like a fiction, but at the same time you want a bona fide, informative, true subject; then this has got to be it.Definitely getting a copy of the second volume.
review 2: Super gritty story about a horrific and badly run jail. Persons jailed for minor drug use and put in together with murderous psychopaths, female inmates are sexually assaulted everywhere, and VIP prisoners are allowed to renovate their cells while others get to stay in cell tikus. Bonella gives an empathetic light onto many of the persons in there for drug use - that they are normal human beings dependent on substances. less

For what this book is trying to be, it is exactly. Compelling with a lot of WTF factor!
