review 1: Set in Virginia in 1972, this novel deals with so many of the big issues: gender, race, loss of loved ones, making hard choices ( And the right one at that), family history, and standing up even if you're in the minority in your belief. Red is a 12-year-old boy who is asked to deal with more than is fair--but he learns that life isn't fair for most people and he is responsible for making a change for the better. I found this novel engaging and inspiring. It evokes strong emotions, and helped remind me that inequality isn't over and we still have to do what we can to change it. I also identified with the young teacher character--someone I hope I can be.
review 2: Kathryn Erskine's SEEING RED is one of the best books for children I've read in the past year. (Alth
... moreough, as with most excellent children's books, adults would enjoy it, too.) Set in the rural Virginia of 1972, with the Civil Rights movement, Women's Liberation, and the Vietnam war as background, SEEING RED is the story of a white boy who finds his whole world changing. Naive about race relations and women's issues at the beginning of the book, Red is forced to not only see the dark shadows of racism and sexism and how they affect those he cares about ... but begins to understand why understanding history makes a difference. His world view is complicated by his changing understanding of the adults and young people around him .. even of his own family ... as he tries to stand up for justice ... and finds doing so is not easy. Even determining what IS justice is not simple. Definitely a five star book! less

Sort of juvenile, but a good story and well written. Some grammatical errors in the book though.

Engaging story of segregation- great characters. I loved the author's note at the end.
