review 1: I highly recommend this book. Kathryn Hansen's ideas have an intuitive appeal: she views bulimia as a habit, cemented by repetition, rather than an expression of some "deeper" issue that therapy would work to solve while ignoring the binge eating behaviors that define bulimia in the first place. Hansen writes that we binge because of urges to binge - not because we have mommy issues or because we're lonely or whatnot. This book is completely different from other self-help books you'll find in the eating disorder section of the bookstore because it focuses on the physiological aspect of bulimia. I'm hoping I can apply some of Hansen's techniques to my own life!
review 2: Hansen does a great service in transposing Rational Recovery's ideology to eating disorders.
... more While I professionally believe in the link between trauma/mental illness and addiction/eating disorders, I recognize this could not possibly be true for all people. I am excited by efforts to engineer new methods of battling these issues. And even if emotional issues lie beneath an eating disorder, this information is useful. That said, I feel Ms. Hansen could have used to personalize her experience more instead of making generalizations. As she herself explains, generalizations about eating disorders can be harmful to recovery. As others have said, the book is needlessly repetitive, and fills pages with an almost cold, robotic fervor, but I greatly appreciated the relatable personal stories. This is a must read for those struggling to find a solution to their binge eating issues, especially those who feel therapeutic methods have not made direct impact. less

Good book but too long. The information could have been conveyed in a much smaller/quicker read.

Interesting yet oversimplified approach to binge eating. Felt the book was repetitive.

Certain aspects were interesting but it was too drawn out.
