review 1: This is my third Katie Fforde book, and I picked it specifically because I thought the plot sounded romantic... and it was in its way, and I enjoyed it in the way I think I was supposed to; a quick, light, entertaining read. There were many out loud chuckling moments and I liked almost all the characters, especially Dermot. However, I did have issues with it... namely Laura. I struggled with Laura... sometimes I thought I had her figured out and other times she just completely baffled me. I understand that this book was about her growing in confidence and learning to live outside her comfort zone, so I was excited for her for the first half of the book, but the second half of the book I could not find much sympathy for her. If someone is not mature enough to ask for clarif... moreication over a misunderstood situation or hurt feelings, than they are not mature enough to be in a serious relationship. It's called communication and it is essential for any type of relationship. She shouldn't have run away, but should have confronted Dermot... and after that scene she lost a lot of my respect. She just seemed whiny. Every time she complained about a broken heart I thought, "You know what you should do? Answer your phone!!!!" Anyways, aside from that immense frustration I enjoyed the book and was smiling emphatically at the end. The book is quite similar, I think, to one of her later ones which I read first, Recipe for Love. And to be honest, I liked Recipe for Love more. The MC in that book at least had more of a reason for the inevitable dramatic angst necessary, apparently, in this genre. Katie Ffrode is definitely not a must read for me, but if I find one with a plot I am interested in I might be bothered to look it up in the library.
review 2: This was the hardest book I ever had to get through. The plot was just unnecessarily winding. It was the sequence of girl falls for boy, doesn't want to feel that way for the boy and tries to avoid him, falls for boy again. The worst part is what made the protagonist Laura stop wanting the boy Dermot was another girl who, to me, somehow was no threat at all. Yet Laura makes a huge fuss over this girl who she barely knows, convinced she's Dermot's girlfriend. Please. I was not the least convinced. Also, her consistent thoughts that she is in love with him was quite sickening. She does not know the man. All she knows about him is through his writing. He cannot be her soul mate through this limited knowledge of him. Ditto him towards her - how does he love her and know she's his soul mate if they spend the majority of the plot avoiding each other??!!I am honestly still questioning why the book's title is Love Letters. As far as I know, there were no letters involved throughout the book. I don't usually give such low ratings and I tried hard to like it but it didn't work out that well. less
