review 1: So disappointed with the ending, it was completely rushed. Philip proclaiming his love for Ellen came out in a rush but he didn't seem particularly upset to find out Jacques tried to drown her. Felt like the author got bored three quarters of the way through and didn't put any effort into finishing the story. Would not entice me to read any other books which was a pity as before the last section I would probably have given the book 3.5 stars. I'm giving 2 because the book was free.
review 2: This is a lovely read by Kay. First I usually don't like first person narratives. But Kay does really well and covering every bit of the story from Ellen's point of view. The book starts off a bit slow, I was wondering if I would finish this book, but once Ellen meets Luc
... morey, the story picks up from there very well to the end. Its a beautiful description of France, its life after the revolution. I wish Lucy's intentions for Philip had been made clearer, time & again I wondered will they, won't they. But it was all neatly tied in the end, too neat perhaps. I also would have liked Philip to be fleshed out a bit more. For all the drama even the Marquise's disappearance and Madame Albert's reasons in the end could have been developed a little more. While the ending felt a bit rushed, I loved reading this and is one of the books I will shelve for life. Good job Kay less
