review 1: I was given a free copy from the author in return for an honest review. This story is set between 1942 and 1948 and is told in flashbacks that help set up the relationship between Jim and Cal. They meet on a train on the way to Paris Island in 1942, where they become Marines. They end up going through WWII together and become the best of friends. Throughout the entire story we constantly jump back and forth between 1942 and 1948 to illustrate their times during war with them and their friends and to show the things they went through that brought them so close. We watch Cal begin to fall for Jim at a time when it was illegal for men to be in love. After the war, when everyone went home, Jim goes back to his wife and infant daughter while Cal goes back to Manhattan and his r... moreich father who he could never please. Then tragedy strikes and Jim’s wife is killed in a car accident and Jim is left with a young daughter and a toddler son and an apple orchard and no one to help him with either. So Cal immediately drops what he is doing to come live with his best friend and give him a hand. Immediately upon seeing Jim though, the old feelings of love come rushing back. It doesn’t take long for Jim to start seeing Cal differently. Jim isn’t as straight as he thought he was and Cal makes him realize this. Jim can’t stop himself from pursuing Cal but at the same time, he thinks what they are doing it wrong so there is a lot of angst and turmoil. Cal is in love with Jim and can’t believe Jim seems to be returning his feelings, but he also doesn’t feel like they are doing anything wrong and finally decides he won’t accept anything from Jim if Jim can’t accept them both together as something good. So Cal takes drastic measures. This is the wakeup call Jim needed. Of course it works out in the end though. This is a really good story and is one I would recommend if you are looking for something outside the ordinary. It is set in a time when homosexuality is illegal so they must be very careful and guarded about their feelings. They are in the military so men have to be extra careful about their feelings. You wouldn’t simply be kicked out, you would be arrested. There is a fair amount of angst if you enjoy it but it’s not too heavy and it’s definitely resolved. The characters have good dimension with a fantastic story arc. All of the characters, including the supporting cast are very likeable. The setting is described very well so you can easily fall into the story as you read. It’s an all-around good read.
review 2: This was very well written! I was amazed at the true to real life experiences that Jim and Cal went through. I honestly didn't know how horrible it had been. I had to Google the battle of Okinawa. :(I like the flashbacks! I'm one of those rare readers that the more unconventional it is, the more I like it. I also like that it stayed with how it was back then, truly historical! The epilogue! ♡Excellent read! less
