review 1: A quick read. Story of 70-year-old grandmother helping her 8-year-old granddaughter with a "Generations" report for school. Several secrets in foreshadowing that keep the reader interested enough to find out what happened and what will happen. I liked the grandmother's voice (narrator in first person) and especially found thought provoking, the author's suggestion that the narrator might be "unreliable" because of her age and relationship to the other characters.
review 2: I happened across this book, it was in a pile of novels passed over to me by a friend and looked like something I 'might' enjoy so I tossed it on my reading pile. I ran out of things to read due to my local library's wait-list and picked it up thinking I would read a page or two and ended up
... morefinishing it in a day. I often mention a book was a quick read for me when what I should say is 'I read quickly' haha. So this was another 'quick read' that surprised me. It moved along quickly enough to keep me interested and yet the story was told in a subtle gentle way. It explored some tough issues, many of them in fact and had recurrent themes. I normally do not enjoy diary entry narrative as I find it lacking in detail, opposing views and slow moving but in this case it worked well. I would recommend this book to women in particular and those who enjoy stories of family ties and secrets told from an older generation. less
