review 1: This one was a very quick read, about destructive family patterns and the point where a person finally confronts their life. That person is Ann, an elderly woman with dementia, when her granddaughter Ellie starts asking about the past as part of a school project. I really liked the growing affection between Ann and Ellie, and the way that Ann starts to become a stronger person, even so late in life. Still, I spent much of the book wanting to hit the characters with a rolled up newspaper until they got some sense. Too much infidelity and slinking around and simmering in chronic unhappiness. Overall, I did like the book, though.
review 2: So, I found the book very similar to "We Need to Talk About Kevin." I know a lot of people probably like the ambiguity of not
... moreknowing whether Ann's version was reliable but I did not like it, I guess it's a matter of preference. Overall, I liked the book because it was a fast, involving read but I felt like there was something missing from the explanation of Emma's personality. I understand that she was supposed to be a difficult child but I still felt like there was something missing. I really enjoyed the history of Ann's family and the descriptions of her wealthier past. less
