review 1: This book was about a young girl teaching he tradition of her ancestors. Ellen would always see the broom resting above the hearth was special. There was an announcement in church that marriages of former slaves will be registered, Ellen hears why this is so important. Her mama and papa, told Ellen that since they could not get married when they were slaves what they could do was jump over a broom. Jumping over the broom was a way to show their commitment to being husband and wife. The family is now on their way to the courthouse. Ellen carries the broom and decorates it with beautiful flowers and finds a way of incorporating it in the celebration of her parents’ marriage. I really enjoyed the illustrations in this book they were very bright and joyful. Ellen’s Broo... morem is a great story to read to children and talk about all the different traditions that we have and celebrate.
review 2: This book is about a young African American girl who has grown up during slavery in America. Slavery has just ended and now her mother and father can legally get married. It tells the story of a broom the family kept in their home as a sign of their marriage before slavery ended. Newly weds would put their broom on the ground and "leap into life together." While her family waits outside the courthouse Ellen and her sister decorate the broom with flowers. Ellen's parents are married legally and they jump over their broom like they did before. This story is a great way to introduce slavery and the civil rights movement to younger kids. It discusses it in a kid friendly way that is easy to understand. The illustrations in the book were beautiful and full of detail. They are unique and help reinforcing the story. This was a great book! less
