review 1: I would give this 2 and 1/2 stars if that was (were?) an option. I read it despite having first read numerous negative reviews. Maybe I should have heeded the warnings. However, I was interested in it because the main character [Dr. Chance] was a neuropsychiatrist who specialized in trauamatic brain injuries. The part that annoyed me (and I knew this going in) was that he becomes involved with a client. Being a therapist myself, it really bugs me when a professional crosses such a serious boundary as that. I know, I know, it's just a book. BUT, it still bothers me. Overall, Dr. Chance was an idiot. And the girl he falls for is not even likeable. The only character I really liked was D. Now that I think about it, 2 stars is about right, maybe even too gene... morerous.
review 2: Crafty, that’s the word for this book. Our protagonist is a shrink, Dr. Chance, with plenty of his own issues, who takes all kinds of chances (get it?) while going through many trials and tribulations that can read “both entirely plausible and hilariously wrong.” I thought the author took a chance as neither the character nor reader ever fully knows what's real and what's perceived. Lots of crazies in this book. I believe the genre for this one would be dark comedy as I found myself laughing out loud more than once to the type of disturbing scenes that I normally shy away from. less

Thriller with a mounting sense of dread. What bad decision will our hero make next?

3.5. Gillian Flynn-y, but not quite as suspenseful and much more confusing.

I listened to this on audio and I thought it was terrific.

Disappointing outing. Almost unintelligible.
