review 1: I liked this one a lot less than his U. S. Presidents trivia guide. Perhaps the subject area wasn't as appealing to me, but I actually found it to be a bit textbook-y (albeit with Jennings clear voice and humorous tone). I can see a kid who is into Greek mythology loving this book, but there were so many "characters" to keep track of that I got bored with it as a casual learner of the topic. The criticism for this book is the same as the U.S. Presidents book--I think this has entertainment value, but not instructional value in social studies. However, there is an added issue to this book other than relegating social studies content to trivial facts-- myths are not social studies content! It is interesting to learn about the culture of ancient Greeks, but focusing so much o... moren the myths (creation myths especially) is misrepresenting myths as fact.1/3
review 2: Greek Mythology by Ken Jennings is a children's non-fiction book that is just what children need to learn their Greek facts. This is an interactive trivia book has loads of fun illustrations, trivia, and quizzes to test a child's knowledge about myths like how Theseus escaped the Labyrinth, why Atlas holds the world, how Prometheus outsmarted the gods, and why there are seasons because of Persephone and her bargain with Hades. This is a fun book that will help children understand Greek gods and goddesses in a simple and informative way.I would pair this book with any of the Percy Jackson books because the series involves the journey of Percy Jackson, son of Poseidon, in all his adventures to stop Kronos from taking over the world. Though the books do explain some of the myths as they unfold in the story, some children might have a difficult understanding if they have not read the myths and are not aware of certain back stories that the gods and goddesses have. Thus the Greek Mythology book will help to clear up any questions. less
