review 1: I really liked this. I discovered the Ace Attorney DS games a few years ago and I became addicted to them very quickly. I love the quirky characters, the humour and the mystery (although I guessed the real killer very early on in this one). When I discovered that there is Ace Attorney manga I had to read it! And I found it to be very similar to the game. In this volume, you're defending Larry Butz once again. He's been accused of murder and, of course, he didn't do it but all the evidence points to him. The emotions and personalities are conveyed very well in this manga and are consistent with the games. The courtroom proceedings are also familiar and the occasional 'objection!' completes the similarities of the manga to the DS games.I loved this manga but I'm giving it 4 ... morestars because it's quite short. It's like the initial case in each Ace Attorney game, which are usually short and simple to introduce the player to the format and gameplay. In the games, the other cases are always longer, more complicated and far more interesting, so I'm hoping that subsequent volumes of the manga will be as well.
review 2: First things first: This is NOT up to the quality of the Ace Attorney games. But you probably expected that anyway.Second things second: It seems like a strange conceit to start things out with what would basically be one of the tutorial cases in the games. I mean, in a game, it only makes sense that you'd need an easy case to learn the mechanics, right? It makes less sense in a printed medium where, yes, of course you can "play along" if you'd like, that's sort of the point of reading mysteries, but everything proceeds forward anyway regardless. It's not a bad case, though.Third things third: A demon spider is just a little too fantastical for this series, isn't it? Yes, of course it's not ACTUALLY a demon spider, it's just some guy yet-to-be-determined (it ends on a cliffhanger) playing dress-up. And that's....so, so silly. And they keep calling him a spider-man, though of course he's not THAT Spider-Man, though I think he gets name-dropped at one point. It's hard to rate this volume when the value of the silliness rides so heavily on whether or not there's a sensible resolution to come in the next one, so....Two-and-a-half stars seems fair, maybe? less
