review 1: This was charming description of an Irish girl born into a family of fisherman's wives and the impact her family has on her. We meet Janie at the moment of her birth and follow her as she grows up, struggling to understand life through the eyes of an alcoholic mother who seems to move from one irresponsible man to the next (at least Tony Hogan bought me an ice cream float before he took my ma away!). I don't usually like writing in strong dialect, but Hudson did a fabulous job of letting me hear the culture about which I was reading.
review 2: Hudson is a promising Scottish author who mixes dark humor with some witty dialogue. The story is centered around young Janie Ryan, from her birth until she's roughly 16 years old, and her relationship with her ma. Her
... morema makes a series of bad relationship decisions that all end the same way, with her and Janie trying to get through life together. It's a good premise, but the execution didn't quite work for me. The characters weren't quite as fleshed out as I would've liked. Hudson still shows a lot of promise and I look forward to the follow-up. less
