The Ruby Red Trilogy
review 2: I really enjoyed this trilogy; it was a fun, quick read. Kerstin Gi
... moreer is certainly not the first writer who came up with the idea of time travel, but the world she created out of it is original and creative. Nevertheless, some motives are eternal in all fantasy books; there's always that completely ordinary girl who, by virtue of circumstances, becomes extraordinary. And there's always that boy that she just 'hates' from the moment she sees him but it's obvious from the beginning that she'll fall for him. I thought it was interesting how she was able to see ghosts and other creatures, like the gargoyle Ximerius, it made me wonder why was this relevant to the story because you don't just introduce a talking, living gargoyle for the fun of it, even though it contributed to the dynamics of the story. His inappropriate comments like 'kissy, kissy' while she was kissing Gideon cracked me up. Another character I just loved is Gwen's best friend Leslie; she's loyal, brave, incredibly smart and selfless, she's the type of friend you want to have by your side in case you discover you've inherited family's time travel gene. If you watch 'Teen Wolf', you'll know why she reminds me of Styles: she's Styles to Gwen's Scott. I know most people are annoyed by Charlotte, and I agree that she's that typical perfect, boring girl, but I also feel sorry for her; she was believed to be the gene carrier, spent her whole learning stuff like fencing, piano, French, etc., in order to be safe and authentic once the gene is triggered. But it turned out it wasn't her, it was her ignorant cousin Gwen who spent most of her spare time watching romantic movies with Leslie. And unlike Gwen, she actually wanted that kind of life. She's probably the only one who wanted it; when Gideon found out, he saw it as a way out for her, he told her she was free, she could have a normal life, friends, study abroad. I would have been relived too, but minds like Charlotte's don't work that way, she's too robotic, too blinkered by what she had been taught her whole life, and a lot of her arrogance is her mother's fault, for she fed her ego since she was a little girl. So to find out she wasn't the gene carrier was pretty much the end of the world to her. Not to mention she was in love with Gideon. I thought Gwen's on-off relationship with Gideon tiresome at times, and Gwen was annoyingly melodramatic about it, but to be real, that's every teenage girl in love so it would be absurd to expect a flawless, always strong heroine. While Gwen and Gideon didn't captivate me as much as a couple, I loved Lucy and Paul. I thought their hiding and running away in the past, their secrets and rebellion against the Guardians were one of the most exciting parts of the books. They're both strong characters and very believable as s couple. All in all, it was an enjoyable read, I have no hesitation in recommending the books. (less) less
