review 1: This is the second book I have read written by Pastor DeYoung. The writing style between the two seem very consistent. I'm not sure if his books are short books or long pamphlets but this is another fairly quick read. His style and syntax are very easy to read, not a book for those looking for intellectual heft. It offers some good advice to a generation of Christians that seem to be stuck in neutral. As a society, we have raised up a generation of "lost boys", young people stuck in Neverland, never growing up, reveling in adultescence (a rather clever term coined by the author). This book takes aim at the Christians of that "lost boy" generation. It is a call to action to stop the spiritual analysis paralysis that the author thinks is prevalent in that generation. I think... more his analysis is spot on. It can be a hard lesson to receive but "he who has ears to listen" will find some great advice in the short and simple book.
review 2: The summary: "So go marry someone, provided you're equally yoked and you actually like being with each other. Go get a job, provided it's not wicked. Go live somewhere in something with somebody or nobody. But put aside the passivity and the quest for complete fulfillment and the perfectionism and the preoccupation with the future, and for God's sake start making some decisions in your life. Don't wait for the liver-shiver. If you are seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, you will be in God's will, so just go out and do something." [page 61]The best word[s]: "God is not a Magic 8-ball we shake up and peer into whenever we have a decision to make. He is a good God who gives us brains, shows us the way of obedience, and invites us to take risks for Him." [page 26]"Don't ask to see all the plans I've made for you. Ask Me for wisdom so you'll know how to live according to My Book." [page 90]My Thoughts: "Just Do Something" is filled with lots of personal advice, practical advice on what God's will is. Through our experiences each of us have found out that God's will is not like google maps. God does not simply tell us which job to take, which school to go to, which person to date to get us to our fantasized destination. Each chapter contains about 5 things/tools/problems/reasons/suggestions of insight on how to reroute ourselves on to God's will. While it lacks the creativity of one C.S. Lewis, who offers an outside perspective of Christian predicaments; is practical and systematic. The best pieces of this book were entangled in scripture, not in the author's own personal experience, although it offered great observations. I would label this a good-easy-read that makes the Christian assess how he or she seeks the will of God. I would recommend this book to High School and College students especially. less
