review 1: First off, the pictures are gorgeous. You can absolutely see what emotions Dr Nugent and Mr Morell were trying to capture in every single shot. Dr Nugent's text is also gentle and illuminating, and provides quite a bit of insight into the ways babies communicate. The reason I didn't give this book a higher rating was because Dr Nugent made a point of offering no prescriptions with this book, which to my practical mind seems like an opportunity lost. While his approach will appeal to a greater number of people, I wouldn't necessarily spend money on something that wasn't going to give me more answers besides "sometimes, your baby will just cry uncontrollably and there's nothing you can do about it. Here's a picture of what that looks like."I'm also torn as to whether I think ... morethis book would've been better served by being published in hardback, more as a coffee table book. The pictures are so lovely that it seems a shame to not have them in a more protective jacket. I did whole-heartedly enjoy the typeface used for this book, though. Elegant choice.I received this book gratis as part of GoodReads' First Reads program.
review 2: This review is for the uncorrected proof.I received Your Baby Is Speaking To You as part of the Goodreads First Reads program and it is simply a lovely book. Abelardo Morell's photography is gorgeous and seamlessly tied to sensitive, informative text. Dr. Nugent has a lilting way of speaking to the reader that evokes the hushed awe one feels holding a newborn child while presenting us with a science-based examination of infant behavior and reactions. His approach, though developed by years of investigative research, never feels clinical or detached; instead, it is a warm benediction for anyone encountering a newborn. This book can offer insight and reassurance to anybody, even seasoned pros at childrearing, but never feels like a how-to manual. It is an unusual combination of coffee table book and parental guide, and would be a wonderful gift to any person about to have a baby enter their life. less
