review 1: This is a really beautiful, and beautifully somber re-telling of the martyrdom of Hypatia of Alexandria. The author has come up with so many interesting and intriguing twists and turns of plot, as to make it unpredictable. The characterizations are wonderful and carefully thought out. If you are interested in history of late antiquity, early Christianity, or merely want an intelligent novel, this is it.
review 2: First book I read in 2014. If the rest of my years reading lives up to this one, it will be a great year for reading, and I have a long list. I've taken to choosing my books from goodreads rather than amazon or whatever. I find the bad reviews as helpful as the good ones. I couldn't give this tremendous story anything but a good review. Why not fi... moreve stars? Because I reserve 5 stars for books that change my life. This one broke my heart, but the way things are going in so many ways, and books are one of them, heart break is becoming a way of life. less
