review 1: I liked this one a lot more than the first instalment. Which is not to say that I didn't enjoy Rue Britannia but it felt more like a prequel, which established the lore and setting that the characters in The Singles Club get to inhabit. This is a well told story, which each chapter weaving subtly into the next. I've always been fascinated by this method of story telling (a series of short pieces which loosely connect to form a single narrative) and this is one of the best examples that I've found. I especially loved the way the art style changed slightly to reflect the character at the centre of each chapter.Great characters, great ideas, great pictures.
review 2: The narrative of Phonogram 2 is a lot more "slight" than that of the first volume, Rue Britannia
... more. However, in many ways that's a positive - Britannia was a dense, heady work, relishing in obscurity and, I suspect, pretty much impenetrable to anyone who wasn't an obsessive singles buyer in 1996. Singles club follows seven parallel storylines about seven people at the same club on the same night - the attention to detail (especially on a second reading, when you notice all the characters in the backgrounds of the different stories) is incredible, and the move from B&W to full colour artwork really raises the production quality - definitely one of the prettiest comics I've read.Again, this is still willfully obscure stuff, but a fantastic read for anyone who loves comics and indie music in equal measure. less
