Uncanny X-Men Vol. 2
review 1: Compared the the classic "Phoenix Force" stories, this one doesn't have the mystery, tension, or slow build that makes them truly effective. On the other hand, having this outsized Pheonix incarnation split among several heroes is a clever twist, and Gillen does interesting things with it.I did feel the battle with Sinister in #15-#17 was a bit drawn out and overblown, but the climax in #19 was effective. I've kept up with the last year or two of the Brian Michael Bendis book, and it's interesting to see the actions that set up that situation. All in all, I'd say this is a good superhero book but not a great X-Men book; it's missing a lot of the subtle characterizations that make the team members so memorable.
review 2: This Strange Unpleasant Land (15-17). This
... more is a great finale for the Sinister arc that Gillen began at the start of the new Uncanny run. It's appropriately epic and also casts a great light on a number of different characters [8/10].Finale (18-20). The last three issues are a great ending to Uncanny X-Men v2. The issue in the middle, The Passion of Scott Summers (19) is a pitch-perfect, beautiful, and original look at the final Phoenix battle [10/10]. The surrounding issues are still quite good, particularly in the interactions between Magik and Colossus [8/10]. less
