review 1: Every 90 years, twelve gods are reincarnated. Once they come into their powers, they have two years to live, to influence, to be gods. The current incarnation are making the rounds as pop stars, eating and breathing devotion from their fans from the stage. It isn't all rainbows and sunshine though. There are nonbelievers, and they will do anything to see the gods put down, never to rise up again.Image comics is rocking it out of the park what with this and Saga and Walking Dead etc., etc., etc. The Wicked and the Divine is awesome - the premise is wildly intriguing - what would gods do with only two years to live? Where do they come from? How do they die? The art is fantastic - colorful and eye-catching. The gods are rendered like rich rock stars - with Baal in a ... morecolored suit and gold chain, Sakhmet looking stunningly like Rihanna, and Luci like a young Bowie of course. The images are vibrant and lively and keep you turning the pages. I think the writing leaves a little to be desired, however. The dialogue is pat - almost too pat. It's like one of those teen novels with witty retorts and epic monologing using words and phrases that real teens would NEVER use. The words just fall into place neat and tidy, everything a carefully prepared script. Beyond that, the world building was excellent and the art, still divine. I will keep reading this series. I do want to find out what happens to these gods.
review 2: Bold, brash, brilliant, yet very cliche typical teen angst in how it yearns for total authentic, in-the-moment feeling, something that didn't always come across to this reader.Laura was awesome, funny when she was trying to play it all cool (she fucking nailed it), but while I know Gillen was trying to get across the authenticness of teens and how bold and unthinking youth can be... I kind of wanted to shake some sense into Laura? There are plenty of teens who think beyond the now, beyond the next epic moment that could be happening right *now* if you just toss away your worldly tethers. Also, I really wish the final vignette had been more present across the entire work. It felt like we were supposed to feel it, but the effort wasn't put in.All that said, this may sound like a less-than 4 star review, and it's not. It's gorgeously illustrated and has a heady euphoria of immediate life and death. I will be reading the next volume of this band of gods and a brooding, plotting Laura. less
