review 1: This is a very solid and entertaining Victorian mystery set around a fictional but plausible Jack the Ripper scenario. The sociological tensions of English class and gender inequality of the period dresses the story with some depth and authenticity without too much editorializing. And it satisfies our CSI-crazed appetites with a progressive detective's embracing of the then, emerging discipline of forensics science. It's lighter than Conan Doyle and Carr, but reminiscent. And now I'm thoroughly hooked on the series. It missed 5 stars for me for two reasons: 1.) The character development could have gone deeper. 2.) There were several jolting typos and editing errors. Next up: City of Light
review 2: Amazon freebie .. well written, but the editing could use some
... morehelp. Unfortunately, I find it frustrating when a word is doubled (the the) or the wrong word is used (an for and) or the sentence is amiss (...could only be ended with plunge into the river..) and these tend to distract me from the story. This story is centered around Jack the Ripper but unlike real life, it comes to a conclusion, if not an actual solution for the police. The premise was believable and I bought the next book in the series, so I didn't hate it. less
