The Pledge
review 1: The Pledge was a okay book. I enjoyed many parts in the book I just sometimes felt they were incomplete. It felt like the writers thoughts were not completed as she was writhing this book. This book had an amazing concept but it was not well developed. This book wasn't the worst of the worst but it was certainly not the best. I also do not consider this a dystopian novel. I have not read the Body Finder so I don't know this authors strengths, but I will read the Essence because I can't start a trilogy and not finish it.
review 2: In the violent country of Ludania, the classes are strictly divided by the language they speak. The smallest transgression, like looking a member of a higher class in the eye while they are speaking their native tongue, results in imme
... morediate execution. Seventeen-year-old Charlaina has always been able to understand the languages of all classes, and she's spent her life trying to hide her secret. The only place she can really be free is the drug-fueled underground clubs where people go to shake off the oppressive rules of the world they live in. It's there that she meets a beautiful and mysterious boy named Max who speaks a language she's never heard before . . . and her secret is almost exposed.Charlie is intensely attracted to Max, even though she can't be sure where his real loyalties lie. As the emergency drills give way to real crisis and the violence escalates, it becomes clear that Charlie is the key to something much bigger: her country's only chance for freedom from the terrible power of a deadly regime. It took a little while to get into this story, but I'm hooked. Please pass #2! less

I'm not sure what I think. Charlie started to strike me a little too slow around the middle of the book and the story became more plot-driven then character-driven. I was having trouble believing that Charlie, Max and especially Xander could come up with such stupid plans. And the romance between the leads felt a little too like "insta-love." And Max never did answer Charlie's question as to why he first found her interesting (since he says it wasn't because of *spoiler*).What I did like here was the packaging elements: the languages, the essence, the magic. It felt very original and interesting. But I was kind of disappointed by the ending. Maybe it will pick up in the next book? Now I have to decide if I want to read the next book. This book is 2.5 stars. It just barely made it be round up to 3 stars for me (instead of being round down to 2). So I'm not sure if I'll go on to the next book. If I do I might read something else first.

I randomly picked this book up (and the rest of the series) at my library. Once I saw the mixed reviews I was hesitant on reading The Pledge but I tried anyway. Overall it is an enjoyable dystopian novel. The novel went at a somewhat brisk pace. Character development wasn't the best and the story was a bit confusing. But in the end I liked the plot and I didn't regret reading it. I liked Max's and Charlie's romance, the relationship between Charlie and Angelina, and the twists that the author through in. I didn't expect a lot of the stuff that happened and although the twists weren't mind blowing, they certainly were enjoyable. In the end I liked more things about the novel than I disliked so that's why I gave it four stars.
