review 1: A quiet story with humor and grief and some unforgettable characters. Motherless and 5-years-old, Amos is reclaimed by his father after his beloved aunt dies of smallpox. He tries to protect himself from more loss by staying aloof, but that's just not in his nature. Meanwhile he grows up, along with his new family, culminating with a move west on the Oregon Trail. One of the interesting hooks is dowsing, the search for water by walking with a stick and "feeling" it tug.Good book for kids who love historical fiction and don't need tons of adventure to pull them along.
review 2: As a young adult book it provided insight into the lives of the pioneers, the hardships they suffered through with their families, diseases, drought, Indian conflicts, and the movement of
... more people heading to the Oregon Trail. The lead character, Amos, who was left to be raised by family while his father sought to earn a living as a trapper, had to find his own strength and understanding of the life that was foisted upon him and rationalize it with the gift he inherited from his father. Amos took the lessons he learned and applied them to grow into an empathetic, successful young man. He saw through what people offered on the outside and grappled with losing his first crush only to relocate to the frontier territory in Oregon. less

This is a little different for me and I still enjoyed the story or a boys journey to manhood.

2.5 stars. This book was slow and definitely not something I would normally read.
