review 1: I loooooooooooved this book. There were a few moments where I thought my feelings towards it would sour, but the author navigated around those moments and situations fairly deftly and in the end I pretty much ate this book up.Editing this to add: I detracted a full star for the technical side of my reading. There were some style/editing choices I did not agree with, but overall it's a really enjoyable read. I got just a little emotionally invested into the characters and the story, and I'll definitely be reading the next part.
review 2: Hmm, an interesting take on Little Red Riding Hood. Loved a couple of the inserted jokes-'why granny, what big eyes you have!' make me snicker! So, what we have here is the first in the series and I’ve been wanting to delve int
... moreo it for awhile. I figured it was a good wintertime read and so far it has been. Lots of 'snuggled into furs during bad snow storms' imagery, which is just lovely. I went into this knowing there wasn’t much romance in the first installment, it was all about story and world building. The author spent a lot of time introducing us to this world which i thought was a little bit wasteful as we don’t revisit much of the set up; she gives us names and phrases of the town and the setup of the area, but we don’t spent much time there. The main part of this story is the amusing byplay between Scarlet and Liall. Several times Scarlet tries to sneak past Liall so he won’t have to pay the toll, which, instead of coin, the 'wolf' wants a kiss. But each time Scarlet attempts to duck around and fails, the 'price' goes up. These provided a few amusing moments but this book was not really a comedy or even a romance at this point. World shaping events begin to happen and we don’t get much relationship development till the end of the book.SPOILER/SPOILER/SPOILERRight at the end, we get two big happenings; One-Scarlet realizes he's in love with Liall. It feels a little sudden and perhaps unrealistic but i was thinking 'finally, now we're getting somewhere!’ Secondly Liall leaves his band of men behind to return home. He boards the ship and Scarlet chases after him and the two kiss. Again, I’m thinking 'finally!’ BUT i started reading book two, and the authors already pulling back from what she started at the end of book one. So i don’t appreciate that and am not sure if i will continue reading book two if we're just going to backpedal from the progress we finally make at the end of book one! In book one, Liall wonders if Scarlet is his equivalent of a soul mate which sounded promising. But at the beginning of book two, Liall keeps trying to get rid of Scarlet for his own good, admits to himself he’s not in love with Scarlet and realizes he might be keeping Scarlet around more for Lialls own benefit than because he simply wants him there. Am going to try to give book two a chance to redeem itself, but we shall see how far I get!END OF SPOILER/END OF SPOILEROverall, it was an interesting storyline, am glad I read it but am hoping book two really starts developing more of the romance. less
