review 1: Three stars on this one. I did enjoying reading it, I liked having the perspective of the two main characters. I also liked how at the beginning their stories were both disconnected from each other, but as the story progressing they become more and more involved in each other's lives. What really killed it for me was the ending, it felt abrupt and it didn't answer any of the questions I had throughout the book. It didn't answer the most important question actually. I did enjoy reading it, and it kept me curious about what was happening. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone as a must read, maybe as a book to read if you can't decide what you really want to read. I also wouldn't re-read this book. The events in the book though are based on true events, and that makes me very sa... mored but again the ending just ruined it for me.
review 2: Desai overlaid her justifiable outrage of injustices toward women and societal corruptions in India onto a genre crime novel. It fails as a crime novel with an odd device of interweaving the victim's journal entries with the social worker's observations. Thus the reader knows more than the investigator, which I found frustrating. As an indictment of Indian attitudes toward girls and women, it is more successful and worth reading for that aspect. When, one wonders, will baby girls stop being murdered in India? Not forgetting, of course, the plight of mothers. less
