review 1: I watch this show out of morbid curiosity and read the book for the same reason. The book doesn't really give you too many insights to old marriage struggles. I was curious from the show about the whole sharing a kitchen is bad thing and they didn't get into that at all. There's some backstory about how they all met and got "married" but it doesn't really get into too much detail. It's mostly preachy about how the principle makes you a better person and there's a few things said about how monogamy is "simple" and some other stuff that annoyed me. I don't really care what adults do with their own lives. The Browns kids seem pretty "normal" on TV. However, they are members of a religious cult so I guess we'll see... I'm glad I borrowed this book and didn't purchas... moree it.
review 2: I've always seen a bit of a parallel between the minority experience of polygamists and LGBT people. I appreciate how the Browns seem to recognise that too and for such deeply religious people they don't give off a vibe of my way or the highway.I also like how open they are about their weaknesses. They seem to be very self aware about their past and they don't hesitate to lay bare their mistakes and acknowledge how messed up a lot of things were in the early days of their plural marriage. One thing that surprised me too is how practically they all seemed to approach plural marriage. The show gives the impression that they only did it because they believe they had to but the book really revealed their logic and reasoning behind it from a number of perspectives. That said a lot of the book covers things you might have already seen on the show, just in more detail this time. The writing is also pretty flat. It reads like they took turns speaking their story into a dictaphone and had someone clean the transcript up a bit, which I think is probably what happened. If you're a big fan of the Browns and want to get more than you've seen on the show then you'll probably find this enjoyable enough but I wouldn't be in a hurry to recommend it. less

I'm not sure why this fascinates me. I guess it's the psychology of it all.
