review 1: Let me start by saying I'm a fan of (about half of) Kresley Cole's IAD series*. This...was perplexing. Clearly, it's was influenced by the popularity of 50 Shades of Grey. Early on, the writing and plotting was so far below what I was expecting from her, that I started to suspect that they were just letting other authors write books under her name now. Then the idea that this was written on some kind of bet with someone took hold; someone gave her some basic parameters, and it was some kind of dare type situation to see if she could make it a hit. I ended up firmly believing that she (or her publisher) set up some kind of writing exercise where she had to complete a chapter a day, or a certain daily word limit. If you told me this was written as a tag team effort between h... moreer and another up and coming author, I'd believe that, too, because some passages later in did have her characteristic gripping style. Some. Some of the turns/choices of the main character were just baffling, and that aspect gets even worse in part 2. While I was reading it, I couldn't, couldn't get over how quickly it/she would go from 'sexy time' scenes, to having very moving family moments. My brain cannot reconcile itself to flipping those on and off those disparate switches that quickly, and not feeling weird about it.This would definitely be great if you're looking for very Alpha male type behavior and erotica level love scenes, with some light BDSM thrown in, I suppose. Having read a really bad erotic PNR shortly after this, I have to add back stars because seeing it poorly done makes you realize how good Cole is at writing those particular scenes. And the build up factor. It is its own talent, and not everyone can do it. She definitely can. I think it was just the other parts of this particular story I mentioned, and the way they were mixed with with the 'sexy time' scenes, that I couldn't get past. *Although, I'm starting to suspect, it may really be more: in awe of Robert Petkoff as an amazing vocal performance artist.
review 2: I'm a big fan of Kresley Cole's series, from her IAD series to her historical romance so when I saw she had a new series I was really excited and actually didn't even bother to read the description.I was definitely surprised that this was a BDSM erotica book, not surprised in a bad way, I just thought it would be similar to her other contemporary or historical romances. So that definitely kept me on my toes in a manner of speaking. Aleksandr Sevastyan is Russian mob and works for Natalie Porter's father. Natalie has been trying to locate her birthparents with the help of a private eye and little did she know that her father was a big time man in the Russian mob and had sent his right hand man to watch over her. When news spreads to Sevastyan that other rival mob leaders are aware of Natalie and are coming to hurt her, he hauls her onto a plane to head back to the motherland. Natalie is happy to hear that she has finally located her dad and also a little unnerved by it. Added into the mix that she is very much attracted to Sevastyan who is not her typical go to man to date.Sevastyan was the epitome of alpha male. He is completely dominant and devoted to the safety of Natalie and he will not budge unless he wants to. It was amusing to watch him try to avoid Natalie's attempts at seduction and it was fun to see him lose control and learn that Natalie had no problem exploring his darker needs.I'm really curious to see where the next book goes and I'll be reading it next. Thanks to netgalley and Gallery books for providing me with a copy of this book to read and review. less
