review 1: Another treat from Kristen Painter. This spinoff of her Comarré series' character half-fae Augustine definitely did not fail to live up to Ms. Painter's high standards. Everything about this book was breathtaking. Fans of her other series will get a decisively nostalgic vibe from this book; like coming home after a long journey to a cool glass of lemonade on a hot, summer day. To new readers and lovers of urban fantasy and vampires, faeries, shifters and the like, this will feel like an extremely refreshing addition to the genre. Her world-building is beyond compare; the backdrop of the magical, historical city of New Orleans, Louisiana adds a touch of southern grace to the story and, in fact, the city itself seems almost as important a character as Augustine or Harlow. T... morehis, the first book in the fascinating story of Augustine and Harlow comes across seamlessly with unexpected plot-twists, a juicy mystery and chest-grabbing action. The characters' lives and voices redolent in humor and authenticity. All in all, a highly enjoyable literary romp.
review 2: Ugh. Didn't like it. Main characters were irritating and/or one dimensional for most of the book. And the side characters! Oh, don't get me started on the side characters! Their dialogue was so pointless I wouldn't have cared if they hadn't existed at all. In fact, I would have preferred it. I ended up skipping over most of it after a while. The amazing this for me is that the end of this book isn't bad. It is a shame the rest of the book wasn't like that. I can't believe I'm thinking this, but I might actually read the next one. less
