review 1: This is a fantastic read for middle grade kids. My boys would have loved this back when they were that age.But it's great for girls too. It's a rare book that can go both ways. This one has a strong lead male character AND a strong lead female character. Great stuff.PLUS there's a bit of a literary mystery, which is always delightful, AND there's that parent-y stuff that people look for in books for their kids, but that kids stay away from like it was nuclear waste: science and history. Done so very well, the kids will eat it up.The storyline is fast, clipping along to a completely plausible sub-climax, which you think is the end of it, but oh no. There's more. I love the pluck of Eric, and the ultra-pluck of Mandy. The resourcefulness of these characters is wonderful to s... moreee. It's a great story, well-deserving of its selection as the Readers Choice in the MN Book Awards for 2012.What else can we get from Kurtis Scaletta? Oh, wait, he's got more! yay!
review 2: I won The Tanglewood Terror from First Reads. I look forward to reading it now that its arrived. I plan on giving this one to one of my nephews. The book is a nice hardcover with a dust jacket that relates nicely to the content. The author kindly signed this book to my nephew and I appreciated it. Though his handwriting is awful. :D It's a good thing he doesn't release his books that way. I got to the eighth chapter in the first sitting. So far, I'm enjoying this book. It's well written and interesting for an adult while not being too difficult for the intended age group. The characters are relate-able. I have to admit, I really like Cassie. I'll finish up the review and rate the book when I'm done reading.I read this book faster than I've read anything in a long time. Sure, it was a children's book, but it was still excellent. I'm glad I won it. I can only hope my nephew will enjoy it as much as I did. less
