review 1: Just finished reading "Turn the Ship Around! A True Story of Turning Followers into Leaders" (2013) by L. David Marquet. I was quite interested to know what a former Navy captain can offer in leadership advice, when the field is populated by business leaders. As expected from a former military leader, the book is short and very to-the-point. Marquet is a no-nonsense writer who vividly describes his experiences on USS Santa Fe, and some of his contrasting experiences prior to that on USS Sunfish and USS Will Rogers. He describes how he turns the submarine crew from its terrible state to one that became a benchmark in the whole navy, that of which won recognition consistently because of his new rules and implementations at the influence of the late Dr. Stephen Covey. The book ... morecontents are very structured in summarizing each chapter, and hence is very business-centric with its easy-to-remember advice. Although his advice aren't groundbreaking per se, his depictions on the USS Santa Fe gives rich context and background to the advice, which helps to explain what they mean. For instance, he explains how empowerment is not good in turning followers into leaders because of its top-down approach. Instead, he vouches for emancipation in the sense of freeing your subordinates of any instructions and allowing them to be leaders in their own volition. The only setback of Marquet's book is the heavy use of navy jargons. The vivid descriptions of his experiences within the submarine can be very technical on several occasions and thus hard to follow. Readers who understand navy terms would appreciate this trait.Marquet's topics on leadership is, like most of those by other business writers, hardly novel or insightful. However, his no-frills approach is what makes his book an enjoyable read. Perhaps this is one for fans of Covey's wisdom and would like to know how they are applied in real-world application (for this specific case, the navy).NEXT BOOK: "Behind the Beautiful Forevers" by Katherine Boo.
review 2: 6-stars! The best leadership book I have read in years. After having read different books that referenced USN Captain David Marquet's "Leader-Leader" approach (Steven R. Covey, Simon Sinek), I decided I just might learn something from a sailor. Once I started the read, I devoured the book. I recognized good leadership practices I had adopted or experienced and I found myself deepening my understanding of why they work or had worked. This is a book that, if internalized by a leader and his or her organization, will positively change the individual and collective experience of all. The basic premise (in my words) is to invest in leader development and your people, focus on excellence and constant improvement. Sounds simple? Well, once you've read Dave's experience and reflected on his "questions to ask" you realize it is a difficult and turbulent, by highly rewarding and gratifying journey that pays off in the long term. I can't wait to start! less
