Prospero's Daughter
review 1: I really liked the concept of this series - the characters from Shakespeare's The Tempest exist in our modern world and their story isn't the one we've been told. Magic is real and they keep it in order for the rest of us so. But something has gone wrong and the Dread Magician Prospero is missing. We follow his eldest daughter Miranda as she seeks to find and tell all of her siblings of this. It took me a long time to get into this book and into the characters but I kept reading because I wanted to see what Lamplighter did with this interesting premise.
review 2: It's been over four hundred years since the events of Shakespeare's The Tempest. In that time the sorcerer Prospero has achieved everlasting life and shared it with his children. The family busines
... mores is run by one of Prospero's daughters, Miranda. Prospero Inc. secretly uses its magic for good around the world. Out of the blue, Miranda receives a warning from her father: "Beware of the Three Shadowed Ones." When Miranda goes to her father for an explanation, he is nowhere to be found.Miranda begins her journey to find her father and reunite with her estranged siblings. They each hold a staff of power and many secrets about Miranda's past. This jaunt will take her through time and space, over many miles and different places on this planet. Miranda brings along Mab and Mephistopheles for assistance. An aerie being who acts like a hard-boiled detective, and her mentally-unbalanced brother respectively. Together, they must ward off the Shadowed Ones and other ancient demons who want Prospero’s power for their own.I was originally drawn to this book because of the Shakespeare reference. I thought the idea of a 'sequel' to The Tempest could be promising. Unfortunately, it did not work for me. The transition from Shakespeare to Urban Fantasy was odd and very disjointed. The author chose to use flashbacks to tell the back story and it really broke up the pacing. This really bogged down the read for me and made it a struggle to finish. The characters were another disappointment I had with this book. They were flat and underdeveloped and I never warmed up to any of them. Another frustration I had was with the writing style. I didn't think it suited that of The Tempest so this really drew me out of the story. In the end, this book left me with more questions than answers. There is no ending. It just stops abruptly, and I have no interest in continuing the series.*Won in a Goodreads First Reads giveaway less
