review 1: I haven't read prose that brought tears to my eyes in a very long time. Chang's characters are complex, finely wrought. There are no simple formulas here, and Chang does an amazing job of explicating their emotional life. I read it on my Kindle and for the first time used the bookmarking feature because I want to read and re-read several passages. Looking forward to reading "Hunger," her collection of short stories, and Inheritance," a previous novel.

I found it fascinating, absorbing, concise and the prose wonderfully poetic (but not overly done). Yes, there wasn't much d
... moreialog. Yes, it was often hard to penetrate the character's true emotions. Yes, the main character Roman was often such a jerk that I wondered why I cared about him. Or his teacher, Miranda. But I was still engaged and intrigued until the last sentence. I still felt compelled to give the book to my elderly mother to read. Surprisingly, she liked it. I'm sure we'll have an interesting discussion together as result. less

Not badly written, but a little unfocused for most of the run. A hard-to-like main character.
