review 1: Lane Smith writes this cute story about a rabbit learning how to read. The rabbit asks the monkey what he has in his hand. He replies that he has a book in his hand. The rabbit asks how you scroll but he finds out that you just turn the page. The rabbit asks many different questions like what you do with it or how do you use it. The monkey is really nice and tells the rabbit everything about a book. The rabbit thinks that a book is like a computer and asks if it has Wi-Fi or has a mouse but the monkey says it is different than a computer. The rabbit ends up really liking the book and takes it from the monkey. The lesson that can be learned from this book is what a book is all about and what it can be used for. This book would be useful in a classroom setting before teachin... moreg a lesson about reading or books. Nowadays, computers are a lot more common than books, so this story can show kids how great books are and that reading is still very important.
review 2: Soooo I definitely liked this book. My kids really enjoyed it. Our 4 y/o said "It's a book" at random times for weeks after we had to return the book to our library. The artwork is wonderful. All three characters are cleverly drawn with simple but funny expressions and mannerisms. The ape/monkey thing is hilarious and I love when his mouse pops out of his hat. The verbal interplay between him and the *ahem* donkey is fast, fluid and fun to read aloud.I did not feel insulted or put off at all by the story's perceived underlying message of "put away your electronics and actually read something". I'm fortunate enough to have the time to read a lot and I do so - both ebooks and print. Sometimes I'm heavy into digital, sometimes physical. But either way, doesn't bother me. However, I can see some readers feeling like they are being "zinged" and not liking that too much. Obviously the big talking point here with "It's A Book" is the usage of the word jackass at the end. Yes, it's a word for donkey. No, I do not want my kids saying jackass, even though it's a word for donkey. So I just skipped the word altogether when reading this one aloud to our 4 y/o. For him, it simply ended with "It's a book." With our 7y/o I explained the word jackass to her and then asked her never to use it. The problem is, I can't give this book to anyone as a gift or really recommend it to anyone because of the word. I just don't think it makes sense to throw it in there and cause any doubt in reader's (parent's) minds. And I couldn't give this book to a parent who I thought would like the ending joke because I'd fear they'd think I was subtlety telling them to put away their gadgets and recall what a real book is. An irrational fear, yes, I'll admit that. But it still keeps me from buying copies. Without that word jackass - I'd probably consider it. As I wrote earlier, I can't fully recommend this to any kids. If you have a friend who's a parent and who loved that "Go The @&$? To Sleep" book, then "It's A Book" would be a great present. It's a well written (mostly) little story and the illustrations are truly clever and lots of fun. But - I just can't get past that word. So I guess maybe that makes me the jackass?! less

I felt like this book was written for adults. Funny ending, but not one I'm sharing with kids.
