review 1: Grandpa GreenSmith, L., & Leach, M. (2011). Grandpa Green. New York, NY: Roaring Brook Press. Choice BookSchool Library Journal Book Review Stars, August 2011A very "green" book about Grandpa Green's life through the eyes of his grand child. In the end you realize that the garden holds grandpa's memories through Topiaries. The illustrations are done in waterproof ink with all the greenery done in watercolor, oil, and digital paint. The lines of the illustrations showed the emotions of grandpa and movement of animals. I would have the kids draw a garden of pictures that represent the last lesson in a math, science or social studies class. Although the illustrations are good they did not hold up to the Caldecott winners or honor recipients. PreK-3rd G... morerade.
review 2: Contemporary Realistic Fiction. Picture Storybooks.Themes- Grandparents/grandchildren, family history, American historyClassroom Use- Begin a classroom garden, with plants chosen by students to represent who they are (a cactus for a child from Texas, maybe, or chives for a child who loves to cook). Chart the growth of the garden over the school year. Have students cut out and illustrate important events in their lives throughout the year, paste them to stakes, and stick them next to their plants. They will create a garden timeline of their events and the plant's growth. less

Another picture book that I'm just not connecting with. Is this really for kids?
