review 1: This is a MUST HAVE book. Brooks obviously has taught this over and over and used his class notes to teach the rest of us untrained writer pagans who think they can fly by the seat of their pants. This is THE book to use especially for beginner writers. Yes, it is the formula that formula writers use to get published. Who cares. It works. He is especially interested in how to write high literature. How the hero conquers his/her inner demons, becomes a hero because of their learning process, and rescues the situation. His recommendations are more than just a murder mystery. We have to care about the hero. They have to have some redeeming character traits we can relate positively, with empathy, with. In the end, I have become a better reader as a result of this boo... morek. I will look at movies and books differently. What happens in each quartile of the story? Did the author use the milestones of the story correctly and did the author pull it off?
review 2: Very solid writing book focusing on planning your story by focusing on 6 core aspects of story architecture. It felt a bit like he didn't understand that not everyone can plan their story out completely and expect it to come out right the first time. I've found that planning is helpful but if you don't just start writing you will never get the story written. Also, I could tell that he gets a bit lazy as the book goes on and rushes some of his concepts. But I enjoyed it and learned something. less
