Beth Kennedy
review 1: This is book one in a new mystery series. Beth Kennedy is the divorced mother of two children. Her friend talks her into running for (volunteering for) secretary of the PTA. The principal of the elementary school is found murdered. Beth is elected by PTA to contact family for condolence call which results in Agnes' sister giving Beth the keys to clean and investigate the crime scene. One thing leads to another and Beth becomes instrumental in solving the case. As Beth states "As a detective she made a great bookstore owner" and "As an amateur sleuth she made a good single mother of two"
review 2: It's always good to pick up a book and find it's the first rather than the third or fourth in a series. As a former teacher I was interested to see how the murder of a
... more school principal (especially an unliked one) would be handled. Beth doesn't want to be on the PTA executive and after one meeting as secretary she is sure she was correct. The principal has announced there will be an addition to the school, paid for by an anonymous donor, and the PTA is furious since the plans do not indicate any recognition of the real needs of the school, just a grandiose monument to someone's ego. I kept thinking that it would have to be a strange school board in which this sort of development could happen, and the PTA agrees. Everything is shadowed by the discovery that someone has murdered the principal As the police begin to investigate it becomes apparent that they are very suspicious of the more activist parents, most of whom have previously had run-ins with Agnes Mephisto. Beth is sure that the police are missing something becomes involved. It was a pretty good read and I didn't have very many arguments with the way the school was administered. less

Only could read about 30 pages, it was too boring. I didn't laugh at all. :(
