review 1: I wasn't thrilled with this book. Basically my complaint is that it wasn't exciting or suspenseful. I was bored listening to everyone whine about everything. The main convention host was constantly complaining about how hard it was to run a convention, how understaffed he was and how he wasn't making money. The lead detective was constantly complaining about how she wasn't treated fairly at the police department and that her new partner was close minded. The contestants each complaining about everything and over-all, the characters were just a bunch of cry-babies.Maybe the problem with this book is that Ms. Antoniou knows the convention's inner workings too well and exposed the sordid and mundane facts too well. It really takes the bloom off the rose and spoils the fantasy... more of sexy dominatrices, macho gay studs and the whole beautiful fetish scene. She bursts the bubble of the convention fun - Only one volunteer actually gets laid and nobody seems to be having fun. With all the potential sex and fetish toys to explore, Ms. Antoniou spends all her pages describing the stage workings and ticketing process instead actually exploring the dungeon and other exciting fetish stuff. I liked the subject and the setting, I was expecting more naughtiness with my murder. She knows her stuff but is just wasn't a fun read. Maybe her next one will be better.
review 2: Mack Steel is the reigning Mr. Global Leather and while he may have many fans, he doesn’t have many friends. Now it’s time for the annual Mr. & Ms. Global Leather (and Bootblack) contest and for Mack Steel to pass on the crown. Before the contest can begin, Mack Steel is found dead. Detective Rebecca Feldblum is assigned this flustercluck of a case by her Lieutenant since these are “her people”, as she’s one of the few out lesbians on the force. Convoluted by costumes, alternate identities, and political posturing within the community, Det. Feldblum has her work cut out for her. Also, everyone hated Mack Steel, so she’s got a hotel full of suspects and not a lot of time. THE KILLER WORE LEATHER is a great tongue-in-cheek procedural drama with outstanding characters. I found myself laughing out loud at the outlandish characters and events. The author was able to balance great humor with a serious mystery very well. THE KILLER WORE LEATHER also gives people a good deal of correct information on the world of kink and BDSM, which can be much maligned. If you like your mysteries filled with great characters and a lot of laughs, check out THE KILLER WORE LEATHER. less

A very different mystery novel. Lots of new terms and lifestyles to learn about.
