review 1: This book ended up being a shade darker than I had anticipated. The book spent half the time telling the backstory of Iphinigea and the other half telling the present story of Micah. While well told and interesting, I did wish things would get hopping-Micah's life is stand alone interesting, but the other little snippets we get about old magic and Micah's unique interactions with these relics will apparently be further explored in the next book. I didn't feel the big reveal in this book was 'so stunning' as Booklist thought. Maybe for the true YA readers. However I wiki'd intersex out of curiosity and now feel much more informed about it. Society usually wants to assign male or female roles; and as Iphinigea finds out, her assigned role doesn't quite fit her true self. The... more thing that shocked me was the violence. I guess I don't quite understand the world in this book yet; there seems to be magic, technology, science, and art, yet Iphinigea's mother frets over supporting her if she doesn't marry and becomes a spinster. I also got a laugh out of Micah's sexual innocence, which was interspersed with really cheesy and lame 'compliments' to his girlfriend. Just a regular 16 year old boy I suppose. While not a romance, this book seemed to me to explore sexuality more then anything else, and I suppose I was more interested in the fantasy elements. Since these were mostly just hinted at, I gave it the three stars.
review 2: This was good, probably 3.5 stars. A girl runs away and joins the circus, but it is a different world, magic is dying and you slowly find out what caused her to leave. I really want to find out what is inside the glass domes and can't wait to read the next book. I hope there are more answers to the world and the magical possibilities instead of hints and possibilities. The characters are well fleshed and interesting. less

Micah Grey is one of the best characters I've read in a book lately. Long live the Chimaeras!!!

Not at all what I thought it would be, but good. I'll definitely pick up the next book.
