review 1: What a great book of poems! Laura Purdie Salas created this poetry to book to explore different aspects of books. She opens the book with a short poem welcoming her readers by saying put down the remote and come explore all the parts of a book. She has poems about characters, lines in a book, bookshelves, and kinds of books such as diaries. She uses different fonts, poetry forms, and illustration styles throughout. I like how she has a main focus for this poetry book, yet uses various poems inside to talk about details within that main focus. I will definitely be sharing this book with my class in our poetry unit!
review 2: I love to use poetry in my classroom as a read aloud and when we get ready for the end of the day. BookSpeak! is a collection of sill
... morey poems about books. Poems range from parts of books to characters from books that perhaps want recognition or a sequel to their stories. It is a great way to see books in a positive light. The poems reference the craft of books as well, such as authors, literary elements, types of books available etc. It can also be used to teach special concepts about books and genres too, besides it just being a fun read aloud for the class. Author Laura Purdie has also written other poetry books such as Stampede! and a Leaf Can Be... BookSpeak! is the winner of the Minnesota Book Award and a NCTE Notable book. It is definitely a book to consider aside from our favorites from Shell Silverstein. less
