review 1: This YA novel was fun! Set in the 19th century, it is the story of a young woman who wants to go to school and the young man with whom she has been raised who does not want to. Bet, being a clever girl, comes up with a plan. Will, over the summer, will teach her how to behave like a boy, and she will go to school for him, while he fulfills his heart's desire and joins the army. By September, the two set out together. When they reach the school, a new one because Will had been "sent down" from his last, he drops her off and signs up for the war. However, living at a boarding school as a boy proves more challenging than Bet could ever have imagined, from dealing with bullies, to hiding her gender from her oh-so-cute roommate. This is a very satisfying story about a girl's dr... moreeam of an education and the unlikely allies she acquires along the way.
review 2: The book was a nice read, but predictable. I'm a total sucker for the whole women-standing-up-for-themselves-and-doing-a-man's-job sort of thing, but I feel as though it's been overdone. The main character Bet is lovely, but lacks something. I'm not quite sure of what it is, but something there is missing. Though, I did enjoy the chemistry between James and Bet, they were cute and witty. Overall, there was nothing that really stood out about this novel, but it is a nice, short read. less

A nice little story and a very quick read. It's not even 200 pages. I liked it.
