review 1: It’s fun for me to read books about grandmothers because I am one, and I enjoy seeing what others write about what grandmothers do. In this special book, whose illustrations reminds me of some earlier ‘looks’ of picture books, colorful and bold, a little boy visits his Nana in a large city which seems very loud and scary to him. It’s so loud he even struggles to go to sleep-noisy trains and traffic! And it’s scary seeing some strange people, some who are homeless. The first day, however, Nana gives him a cape, one we’ve seen her knitting just the night before, and special things happen. The scary and the noisy turn out to be “extraordinary” instead, a very good place to visit. You’ll need to read to see all the details of this sweet s... moretory.
review 2: I am a softy for great books about grandmothers and this text doesn't disappoint. Nana in the City, transports the reader to the hustle and bustle of NYC. Nana, a city lover and dweller, helps her grandson, a timid scared boy, to conquer the city and see its true beauty through a cape and a shifted perspective. This story is a testament to the power of imagination and perspective. I utilized this book as a read aloud in my classroom before a personal Fall trip to NYC. We discussed the sounds, sights, and smells that Nana and her grandson experienced in the text, then my class predicted the sensory experiences I would have using on what we learned from the text and previous experiences in large cities. After leaving for my trip I took many pictures to document my adventures. Upon my arrival back to school we compared and contrasted my experiences with the characters. This text is also great for teaching point of view and character development for slightly older children. I would recommend this text for all teachers rural, suburban, or urban. It would be a great window into a new locations for those who have never traveled into metropolitan locations or serve as a reflection on one's perspectives and experiences in their current location. less
