My daily post theme for 2017 is on Colleges and Universities.
The plan for starting my blog back in 2014 was at the urging of fellow coaching colleagues to share posts on leadership and/or motivation. Somehow that idea got derailed and turned into daily posts on one theme for an entire year.
In 2014 my daily posts were on the “Beer of the Day”, 2015 it was “A Friend of a Friend”, 2016 I wrote about “North Carolina”, and for 2017 I will focus on “Colleges and Universities”.
I have been associated with colleges since I was 18 and I love them. I have coached/worked at four different universities and in my professional and personal travels visited 100’s more. Each college has something in its history that I want to share that to me make it unique or personal.

Name of University: Meredith College
Location: Raleigh NC
More than one hundred years ago, Meredith College opened with just over 200 women.
In the early 1800’s most of state schools and colleges at the time exclusively educated white men of North Carolina. Churches in North Carolina bore the task of creating schools for women and African Americans.
The Southern Baptist Convention approved the construction of the Baptist Female University, and its first students enrolled at the college in 1899. Located on North Blount Street the Baptist Female University graduated its first class of ten students in 1902.
From 1904 until 1909, the university underwent two name changes: becoming Baptist University for Women in 1904 and Meredith College (in recognition of Thomas Meredith) in 1909. Several years later from 1925 to 1926, Meredith College moved to its current place at 3800 Hillsborough Street near North Carolina State University.

Beginning in the late 1990s, Meredith College experienced significant changes in both its religious affiliations and in its leadership. The board of trustees concluded that to increase academic opportunity it was best to leave the Baptist State Convention, and by 1997 Meredith College was no longer aligned with the convention.
Nearly 2,000 female students attend Meredith College. Meredith College is a member of NCAA Division III and has athletic teams. The alumni population of Meredith College numbers in the 18,000s.
Meredith has one of the more unique nicknames in college sports-Avenging Angels.
