review 1: A very, very, very high 3. The Good:-A manageable cast of diverse but likeable characters. -Avoids UF/PNR clichés like the ever-dreaded love triangle or insta-romances.-A world of its own which doesn't rely on info-dumping.The Not-so Good and Future Hopes:-The POV can be a bit wonky at times. I'm not quite sure what it is (limited-but-not-really-semi-omniscient-third--person?) but it seems to switch in weird spots, making it hard to tell who makes what observation. It made for a bit of a weird disconnect at times BUT it never made me confused as to what was going on, just bugged me a bit.-I heartily applaud the lack of romantic relationships/slow-build relationships going on, but I would've liked to have seen other relationships being built between characters, rather than... more just established relationships being reaffirmed. It's there, and it's good, I'd just like to see more of it in the future.-The plot was pretty original, but I felt it had a tendency to switch directions rather than build up the anticipation to an event and let it play out. It was sometimes like being on a roller coaster and seeing the giant mountain coming up, only to switch tracks at the last minute in favor of a molehill. It made some parts feel a little slower/harder to get through and made the whole of it feel a little less cohesive.Overall: There was really nothing actually bad in this book, which is quite impressive, but there were a few slow spots, and a few things keeping it from clicking into that "this is a great read" spot for me. That being said, it's a good book, worthy of a read-through, and for every slow spot, there was I time I couldn't put it down. I suspect this book plays better as a set-up towards the rest of the series (which I think has great potential).
review 2: This might be only 3.5 stars because it didn't snag me as emotionally as other first books have, but there's a nice depth to most of the characters and their relationships that's unusual to see in a first book, so I'm rounding it up. It's not the buddy-book the description makes it sound like, more of a group adventure that manages to create a new, potentially interesting world. Only character I have an issue with is Katya, as she's written mean for the sake of mean, but she serves her purpose well. Aside from that, I enjoyed the low key romances - this book is far more about relationships in all different forms than "OMG I just met you and now we are in LURVE", which actually doesn't happen and is quite refreshing.I'll look forward to reading the next book - but the downside of discovering a new author/series, that's about a year from now :-/ less
