review 1: I honestly don't know what to feel about the book.It was a short & quick read about a Holly, who is in her senior year, & how she's trying to deal with her mother's death.I felt that it was clichéed and a bit predictable. She starts an affair with a boy, who she is infatuated with, in order to cope with her mother's death, meanwhile making friends with his girlfriend (Saskia) & having Nil (her best friend) crush on her from afar. The events that followed the bonfire were very predictable & then started to jump from point to point, a couple months at a time. Also, I felt that the ending didn't feel like it had a definitive ending at all or a definitive closure/ending with the other characters.
review 2: I think the story was compelling and well done (heck, its a
... more YA novel, if it isn't at least compelling or quick, that's pretty bad) but I felt a lack of plot/development on HOW Holly got into the situation in the first place. Yes, Holly started sleeping with someone after her mom died but the book never delves into how or why, or even why this guy in particular. Overall, I was intrigued by the story and wanted more. Good enough for 3 stars, but I felt like there could have been more setup and wind down. Oh yeah, and I personally have this *thing* against books/stories where almost the entire problem wraps around not telling a single person anything. less
