review 1: A polar bear cub makes a new friend after she leaves her den and ventures across the snow. Together, she and a snow cub frolic across the landscape, rolling down hills, racing past seals, and swiming in the icy sea water. This companion book to Polar Bear Night is filled with powerful, descriptive words that are fun to say and add to the story's pleasure: ("clambers out" (unpaged), "twirling" (unpaged), "scampers" (unpaged),and "glinting sea" (unpaged). The illustrations, linocuts printed with water-based ink on rice paper, are fascinating, creating bluish images of the snowy landscape in which the two friends spend their morning.
review 2: A polar bear cub wakes up and goes out of her den. She follows the cries of the sea gulls. Then all of the sudden a snow c
... moreub (another polar bear) tumbles down a hill. The two new friends race past seals, walruses, and whales to get to the edge of the ocean. And then, what will the do? Why jump in of course, and head to a floating iceberg together. This is a book with a short amount of text, which is perfect for those with shorter attention spans. And the solid images with contrasting colors is perfect for those that need bold images to catch their eye. There are two spreads that are my favorite. The first is of the two cubs coming nose to nose trying to figure out who the other is. The second is when the cubs dive into the sea. The concept on these two spreads is portrayed without any text, yet the complexities of what the cubs are doing and what they think about it is just perfect. I love how kids can also “tell” the story on these pages without an adult getting in the way with a rigid set of text. Although, seriously…this text is perfectly simplistic. This is one book that youngsters (especially those who love bears) will ask for again and again. less
