review 1: While I did enjoy this and I do not regret reading it, I got really tired of Clemmie's SHOCK AND HORROR at everything involving her family. It got very overwrought and tiring, especially when there really wasn't anything too shocking and horrifying. If some of her family members can "get over" the hurts of the past (don't want to reveal too much), then Clemmie certainly can. And of course the romance was entirely contrived.
review 2: Loved this engaging, sweeping historical fiction/women's fiction about a pair of cousins brought together and apart by love and tragedy. Part modern day (ish - I still consider late 90s modern day) NY/London, part 1920s (and earlier) England/Kenya. From the aristocracy to the bohemian cousins Bea and Addie finding their way to... more plucky rising NY lawyer, Clemmie, these women characters were very well developed and real, empathetic despite their flaws. The shifting viewpoints worked exceptionally well here - hard to seamlessly travel from 1926 Kenya to 1999 NYC but the author transitions deftly. The modern day romance piece was a little cheesy for me but added a nice lightness I suppose. My main complaint is a lack of insight into Bea's future. Such an intriguing character I would have loved to hear more about how she ended up. I also loved how the author revealed the big issue early on and the main mystery was how the characters got there and how Clemmie found out. Very well done. I'd look for more by this author but It seems her other works are very different/series type. I hope she writes more like this one! less
