review 1: Συγκλονιστικό μυθιστόρημα με καταιγιστικό ρυθμό αφήγησης σε μια αχλή μυστηρίου και αγωνίας που ολοένα γίνεται πυκνότερη. Πραγματεύεται ένα μέγιστο θέμα, αυτό της απώλειας, παραβάλλοντας ταυτόχρονα τις θεματικές της ενοχής, της μεταμέλειας και της εκδίκησης. Το καλύτερο μυθιστόρημα που διάβασα στο τελευταίο διάστημα και ο αγαπημένος μου νέος συγγραφέας. ΥΓ. Με την ευκαιρία, ένα ευχαριστώ στον Γιώργο Χρονά για τη σύσταση το�... more� βιβλίου σε μια εκπομπή αφιέρωμα για αυτό («Ξενοδοχείο Βαλκάνια») και τον φίλο Αντώνη από την Ολλανδία που είχε την προνοητικότητα να ηχογραφήσει τις εκπομπές -πριν το κρατικό ραδιόφωνο εκπνεύσει εν μια νυκτί- και την καλή προαίρεση να μου τις στείλει.
review 2: I had no idea what to expect when I picked up this book - a dark cover showing a Neapolitan street, the 'hell' (why plural?) in the title, a blurb suggesting the death of a child and perhaps a Dante-esque journey to hell. It's a mixture of elements: wrenching grief at the incidental death of a child, and scenes of the father's journey through Hell to find him. Gaudé dedicates his book to those he has lost - but it's hardly consoling as it shows everyone having to suffer terribly after death. For me the unbelievable scenes from Hell were a mild distraction, but still there were scenes that translated literal suffering into bold images. For example, thorny bushes prevent the living from following the dead - but there are parts of flesh from the living impaled on those bushes as "chaque mort, en disparaissant, emmène avec lui un peu des vivants qui l'entoure". Despite the horror-film aspect, I was engrossed. There is tension set up by veering between events of 1980 and those of 2002; emotions are powerful not cloying, and the characters and settings intrigued me. The Naples earthquake of 1980 when some 2000 died is evoked. Then as I was reading reports came in of an earthquake now in L'Aquila, east of Rome. The book gives no insights to help deal with suffering; but it does show its raw force. less
