review 1: Wonderful story of Italian immigrants at the turn of the century! Loved the character development and I really felt transported to Italy and NYC, could almost smell the lasagna and eggplant parm. Makes me want to see the Tenement Museum on New York's Lower East side more than ever. I also loved that this was a true story about the author's great grandmother and based on stories passed down. I had a little trouble getting into it at first but so glad I stuck with it!
review 2: For me personally this is a four star plus! Elizabeth St. tells the story of Ms. Fabiano’s family on Elizabeth St. in little Italy as told to her by her grandmother. Ms. Fabiano’s family eventually moved to Hoboken NJ after being chased out of NY by the Black Hand. Every time I visit
... moreed my grandmother in Trenton NJ she told me tales how our family had to flee Elizabeth Street. My great grandfather had a deli at 242 Elizabeth, and he would send my grandmother through the streets when she was very little with the pay off, or protection money for the Black Hand tucked in her clothing. The assumption was that gang territory she had to cross would let her pass, never suspecting she was carrying cash. As she got older she baulked at the task, and the one day she had to step over a murdered body in the street is the day she refused to continue which forced our family to move to Trenton NJ in 1917. less
